How Many Different Types Of Liposuction Are Available Today?
A Brief History of Liposuction
The earliest form of liposuction was developed in 1974 by Dr. Giorgio Fischer, then further developed by Dr. Illouz in 1978. Since that time there have been many changes in the types of liposuction available to patients.
Among the many types of liposuction, one in particular stands out as the most popular and safest of the conventional methods, and that is known as tumescent liposuction. This was developed in 1985 by Dr. Klein and Dr. Lillis.
Types of Liposuction Currently Available In order to make liposuction affordable, it was necessary to reduce the amount of time the patient would be hospitalized. Types of liposuction that are currently in use, without exception, do not require hospitalization unless there are drastic complications, and such is not generally the case. As stated above, the most popular of the types of liposuction is the tumescent procedure. This involves light sedation and the injection of the Klein solution through small skin incisions. The Klein solution is then suctioned out through the same cannula with which it was injected. Recovery time is generally short, provided the patient follows the doctor's orders to the letter. Another of the types of liposuction that is currently in use is ultrasound assisted liposuction. This is generally not used in areas where scarring may be a concern, such as the face or neck, because the cannula used in this procedure is larger than that used for tumescent liposuction, and the incision is therefore also larger. Ultrasound assisted liposuction is performed by the application of ultra high frequency sound through the cannula, then suctioning out the dissolved fat. This generally leaves a smooth result and healing time is fairly rapid. Other types of liposuction include traditional liposuction, which is not widely in use today due to the higher incidence of side effects or risks associated with this procedure. Also in use today are other types of liposuction which are variations on the tumescent and ultrasound assisted methods. What Info is Available To Me? Information on the various types of liposuction is widely available to anyone with a computer, Internet connection and the time (and patience) to hunt through websites. Best advice? Look for sites that list the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. These physicians are more likely to be properly trained in the types of liposuction that you are investigating. Regardless of which of the types of liposuction you choose, make your decision based on good information and be sure to choose a physician who is properly trained in your procedure of choice.
